The Episcopal Museum, Vic was founded by Bishop Margades in 1891.
Located alongside the Cathedral, this museum is home to masterpieces of Romanesque and Gothic painting and sculpture. You can also see other collections with work in precious metals, textiles, wrought iron, glassware and ceramics, offering a complete look at the history of religious and decorative art in Catalonia.
Exhibits of the Episcopal Museum
The scene represents the iconography of the Final Judgement, the ‘Parousia’. The figure of this Christ pantocrator is depicted seated, with his right hand raised in blessing and the book of the Gospels open and with the inscription ‘peace and law’.
The ornamentation can be seen on enamel plaques on the circular medallions located on the four arms of the cross.
Melchizedek was a king and priest mentioned during the Abram narrative in the 14th chapter of the Book of Genesis.

Mary’s gestures express a mother’s typical tenderness, and Jesus appears to be playing and moving near Mary’s head.
Saint Lawrence casket is a beautiful Gothic metalwork, made from gold and silver in Barcelona. Its size is 42 × 35 × 22.5cm
The scene represents the moment when Nicodemus pulls the nails from the hand of Christ on the cross, while Joseph of Arimathea makes a gesture to support His body on his shoulders. To the right of the group is the image of the thief Dismas, dead on the cross and with his tongue hanging out, and the thief Gestas on the other side.
In the old Vic Cathedral there were several tombs of bishops, canons, notable families, and so on. But many have been lost completely.
The ‘Cloth of the witches’ is an outstanding woven cloth from the period of Al Andalus which according to tradition was used on the front of an altar, where it served as the ornamental element.
I spent about an hour looking around theEpiscopal Museum. The museum is really beautiful. I’d like to visit the museum again.
